In that poll, Clinton had fewer “very enthusiastic” supporters – 53 per cent for Trump, compared to 45 per cent for Clinton.

ABC noted that enthusiasm for Clinton dropped over the weekend after FBI Director James Comey alerted Congress that the FBI has obtained new material regarding Clinton’s use of a private email server when she served as secretary of state.

But the drop in enthusiasm recorded by the Washington Post/ABC poll was short-lived – Clinton’s share of “very enthusiastic” rebounded six percentage points in this latest poll, while Trump’s support held at 53 per cent.

Meanwhile, a New York Times/CBS poll of 1,333 registered voters found Clinton ahead by three percentage points.
